Uncle Howard’s Pioneer model barns are very versatile, very spacious, single storey buildings. When used with different foundations, Pioneer barns make great animal barns, garages, workshops, businesses, or homes. Framing methods can be post frame (pole barns), stick frame (2x6 stud wall and 2x10 rafters), modern timber frame, modern post frame or a combination. Our Pioneer barns are the easiest and the least expensive to build. When ordered with 14’ tall doors, they make great RV storage buildings. Dress them up with Uncle Howard’s barn accessories for a classic western look. You may choose any siding. The differences in material cost will be pro-rated. All our barn kits feature Uncle Howard’s very fast, very accurate Beltline Building System, so that stone, brick, cedar lap siding, log siding or board and batten skirting may be added now or at a later date.
 

Pioneer barn kit specifications for Uncle Howard’s:

Pioneer barn kits are designed with a standard roof pitch of 6/12 (6” rise per foot). Average roof overhang is 16” plus 4” of rain gutter. Standard sidewall height is 9’-10 ½” above a 4” concrete floor (by owner). Interior peak height is 17’ (24’ wide), 19’ (32’ wide), and 20’ (36’ wide). Center alleys can be widened to 30’ for an overall gable end width up to 54’ by using trusses. The addition of shed wings will widen it up to 78’. Pioneers are usually 24’, 32’, and 36’ wide, and 24’, 36’, 48’ and 60’ long. Depending on the foundation and framing method, posts will be log, glu-lam, milled timber posts, or pressure treated posts. Beams are 6x12 and 4x12 milled timber or laminated structural beams. Rafters are 2x8, 24” or 16” on center for post frame barns or shops. Rafters are 2x10 or 2x12 for energy efficient stick frame, timber frame, and post and beam frame models. ½” 5-ply plywood roof sheathing is standard. No OSB in Uncle Howard’s barns. Fascia and barge are 5/4”x8” (a full 1” thick) unpainted cedar or pre-painted spruce for easy sanding and painting. Corner trim and beltlines are 1”x6” cedar, spruce, or pine, depending on availability in your region.

Standard loft flooring is 2 x 12 joists with 3/4" T&G plywood floor decking. Roof sheathing is 1/2" CDX Plywood. Precut stairs are 2 x 12 horses and 4 x 12 timber treads. Handrails are 1 x 4 cedar. Grip rails are included. Fascia and barge trim are full 1 1/4 x 8 tight knot cedar. Corner trim is 1 x 6 tight knot cedar. Battens are 1 x 3 tight knot cedar. Uncle Howard's does not use OSB (oriented strand board) or composite beams. To prevent water damage, we do not use 2 x 6 T&G lumber as siding for our buildings unless it is covered with waterproof siding.

 

 All Pioneer Style Barns have a 6/12 Roof Pitch, an eave height of 11' 3.5", and an overall height of 18'.

Every Uncle Howard's Barn Kit or Cabin Kit allows you the flexibility of designing your own floorplan. Interior walls can be placed wherever you like. Tell us your needs, and we'll work with you to design the 'perfect' plan for you.
